Practical information : Going out Kenya
Timetable
Happy hours can vary, but are generally held between 5 and 7 pm. In Nairobi, Kenyans like to get together for a drink after work on weekdays. Happy hours have become a shared ritual among the urban middle class.
Night transport
Driving at night is generally not recommended. Similarly, walking is not recommended, especially in Nairobi, even within the same neighborhood. The best option is to use the services of Uber, which will delight night owls. On the coast, the most popular means of transport for short distances, day and night, is the tuk-tuk. Restaurants and hotels can call you one.
Age restrictions
Alcohol is prohibited for sale and consumption by minors.
What's very local
In working-class and underprivileged neighborhoods, it's possible to drink a craft alcohol called "busa", "chang'aa" or "kumi kumi". This very inexpensive alcohol is causing a stir. Produced from fermented millet, sorghum or corn, methanol, fuel or even sulfuric acid is added to obtain a high alcohol content more quickly. A law was passed in 2010 to legalize and better control the production and distribution of this traditional alcohol, but illegal brewing remains widespread, and many speakeasies unfortunately continue to sell this potentially fatal spirit.
Smokers
Smoking is prohibited in public areas, except in dedicated zones. In fact, in some bars, the non-smoking area may become the "dedicated zone". However, the law does not regulate the use of electronic cigarettes.
