Most museums are open between 9am and 5pm, with a weekly closing day. Regional museums are often closed on Fridays between 12.30pm and 2pm. Some museums have extended opening hours at weekends and during school vacations. Almost all are closed for Hari Raya (last day of Ramadan), Christmas and the first day of Chinese New Year.

Enjoying yourself Malaysia

Restaurant opening times vary widely, but can be divided into several categories. Traditional restaurants are open, as in France, for lunch and dinner, often with a weekly closing day. Small restaurants set up in shophouses are open for a single service eight hours a day. If the restaurant opens early in the morning, as is the case with dim sum specialists, they close around 2pm. Those that open late in the morning provide service until around 7pm. And then there are those that open around 5pm and close late into the evening. Food-courts with several stalls are open for lunch or dinner. Cafeterias are generally open 24 hours a day.

Take a break Malaysia

Cafés are open during the day, sometimes very early for kopitiams (local cafés), and close in the late afternoon. Bars open in the late afternoon and close between 1 and 5 a.m., depending on their authorization.

Department stores and shopping centers are generally open from 10am to 8pm, every day of the week, especially in big cities. Smaller stores are more likely to be open between 9am and 6pm, and closed on Sundays. Stores sometimes close between 12.15 and 2.15pm on Fridays, particularly in Islamic states such as Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, Kedah, Perak, Perlis, Selangor, Johor and Negeri Sembilan. In the villages of these states, Friday is often a non-working day for the Malays.

Get out Malaysia

Nightlife isn't exactly the highlight of a stay in Malaysia. With the exception of Kuala Lumpur, Langkawi, Penang and Melaka, few cities offer nightclubs where you can dance the night away. Nightclubs open in the late afternoon, from 5pm, and close at 3am. On weekends, they close at 5am.
