A rural festival that is still alive today, Saint Dimitri's Day marked the end of the harvest and the beginning of winter for the farmers.
Saint Dimitri's Day honors the patron saint of winter and cold. It was the day when seasonal workers were dismissed and commitments were made for the following year. To celebrate Dimitar, Dimitrina, Dimo, Dima, Mitko, Mitra, they were visited without warning to offer them white flowers so that the winter would be mild. The bouquets are tied with a red thread, sign of health and good mood. It is also around this date that one celebrated the end of the building sites.
