Timetable
In town, shops generally open from 8am to 7pm, sometimes with a lunch break. They close on Sundays and sometimes as early as Saturday lunchtime. In tourist resorts, which fill up at weekends, Monday is often the day to rest.Shopping centers are open every day, with longer opening hours, usually from 9am to 9pm, and even later on weekends.
Budget & Tips
In the capital and major cities, you can pay for most purchases by credit card. You can also often pay in US dollars in Asunción, and sometimes in reais, especially in border towns (Ciudad del Este, Pedro Juan Caballero...). In most shopping centers, you can present your foreign passport and ask for a voucher entitling you to a 10% discount in the boutiques (this 10% corresponds to the IVA).
Sales
Black Friday is a much-anticipated event, with major promotions in all areas. It takes place on the last Friday of November, at the start of the hot weather, so it's not surprising that air conditioners, fans and refrigerators are among the top 10 best-selling items!
What's very local
Paraguay is rich in original, high-quality handicrafts (wood, leather, metal, cotton, ceramics...). It's always best to buy directly from artisans and producers in specialized villages. However, prices in stores and at craft stalls in the streets of Asunción are very reasonable. Haggling is not a common practice, and it can be frowned upon to try to negotiate. Occasionally, you'll be offered the " yapa ". Originally, this was a brand of small candies sold in bars. The term has come to refer to gifts from shopkeepers (an extra caramel, tomato or chipa), to thank a good customer.
Tourist traps
Shopping is the main attraction in Ciudad del Este. Be aware, however, that products such as electronics are not necessarily cheaper than in France, and that the temple of Paraguayan capitalism is notorious for its copies and counterfeits. Beware of false bargains on well-known brands, and prefer stores located inside shopping malls to avoid counterfeits. If you buy electronics, ask to try them out in the store, and keep your invoice.
