Los Haitises National Park, a Unesco World Heritage Site, is the hidden gem of the Samana Peninsula, and indeed of the Dominican Republic. It's also Nicolas and Rafael's favourite haunt, and as they navigate their way through the extravagant landscapes, they'll tell you all about the history of the Taino Indians who lived here hundreds of years ago. Their habitat, fascinating caves, preserves the imprint of their passage in the form of petroglyphs and other cave paintings.

Day 1: Parc national Los Haitises
Early in the morning, a bus will take you to Sanchez, where you'll board the boat for a 3-hour cruise through an enchanting landscape reminiscent of Vietnam's Halong Bay. Hundreds of small islets, a generous mangrove populated by curious little crabs that caracolate on the giant roots of the mangroves, then the bird island, home to hundreds of pelicans, vultures, majestic frigate birds and many other types of egrets and herons.
On foot, you'll tread the sacred ground of 3 impressive caves, including one with walls covered in Indian engravings and drawings that Nicolas and Rafael will be delighted to comment on.
An in-depth, gentle visit, with no hurry or rush, taking time to observe, question and understand the soul of this precious place. And to round off these emotionally-charged moments, we enjoyed an aperitif right next to the park wardens' lovely house, and a typical Dominican buffet lunch in a private restaurant on the way back. A wonderful adventure to share with the whole family.
