VISHU

Punctuated by the explosion of firecrackers, this Hindu festival celebrates the^first day of the zodiac calendar throughout Kerala. In order to enjoy a prosperous year, Keralites prepare a puja (offering to the gods) consisting of various objects considered auspicious, placed in a metal container: rice, flowers, fruits, vegetables, new clothes, gold coins... On this occasion, the participants wear new clothes as a symbol of renewal, and the elders distribute money to the children to ensure a prosperous future.
