The anniversary of Buddha's birth is celebrated with great pomp and ceremony in Buddhist temples across the country
The Buddhist community celebrates the anniversary of Buddha's birth, enlightenment and entry into Nirvana. It is therefore a major celebration for all Theravadan Buddhists in Asia. This festival dates back only to 1950 and was established at the initiative of the King of Nepal who made it a public holiday in his country. Visit a Buddhist temple to attend the ceremonies. Birds are released from their cages as a sign of respect for all living creatures.
