Ludovic from Swakopmund day tours is the only French speaking expert in this beautiful coastal town!

Sometimes swept by sand winds, sometimes bathed in coastal fog. Swakopmund has grown since the day the Germans created a port in the middle of the desert to unload ships at anchor at the end of the 19th century. Thanks to its charm as a German provincial town, Swakopmund has become a popular seaside resort for the inhabitants of the capital. After having crossed a dry and arid desert for hundreds of kilometers, Swakopmund appears as a real mirage: contact Ludo on www.swakopmunddaytours.com and

This town's a special place. Today, the Rössing uranium mine, the salt works and guano, oyster farming and tourism have become the main sources of income. The more affluent have opted for villas with sea views that have spread along the coast. In recent years, the city has considerably increased its potential as a major tourist destination in Namibia. Many excursions are offered from Swakopmund and more and more tour operators are moving to the area. The city is developing at a provincial pace appreciated by many Namibians and South Africans. Swakopmund is the country's second "city" after Windhoek and the country's number one destination for activities and shopping.

Next door, little sister Walvis bay. Historically, the ocean shallows that line the entire west coast of southern Africa have prevented large ships from docking. The first to discover Walvis Bay was the Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias in 1487, when he tried to circumnavigate Africa to find a route to Asia. Then came whalers from around the world who echoed the abundance of cetaceans in Whale Bay. Finally the English were the first to plant their flag on the coast. The area was demarcated and officially incorporated into the British colonial empire in 1878. The port then developed thanks to the copper deposits discovered inland. At the beginning of the 20th century Walvis Bay had to face competition from the neighbouring town of Swakopmund, founded by German settlers
