In 2024, the Cité du Vitrail's summer exhibition is devoted to the quarrel that began in 1935 over the desire to adorn the nave of Notre-Dame de Paris with contemporary stained glass. The project, which was championed by twelve renowned master glassmakers, provoked fierce opposition between supporters of an unchanging respect for ancient heritage and advocates of a renewal of sacred art through modern creation. The proposal never saw the light of day. The exhibition, which takes place at Troyes ' Cité du Vitrail, a key cultural site, unveils some 15 stained glass windows, 20 models and sketches, paintings and numerous archive documents. An opportunity to retrace the major stages of the quarrel and its aesthetic and historical implications. For further information, click here.
