A Unesco World Heritage Site, Mont-Saint-Michel is a sumptuous must-see, with millions of visitors every year. Legend has it that it came into being after a huge tidal wave buried the surrounding land beneath the waters. After having known only the quiet life of a village nestling at the foot of its Abbey, the Mont opened up to tourism at the beginning of the 20th century, as the dike that had been built slowly silted up. After ten years' work, a footbridge on stilts joined the Mont, giving it back its maritime character. And don't be fooled: Mont-Saint-Michel is indeed Norman, whatever our Breton neighbors may think!
