Situated between the departments of Vendée, Deux-Sèvres and Charente-Maritime as well as between the regions of Pays de la Loire and Poitou-Charente, the Marais Poitevin covers an area of approximately 100,000 hectares and has a great diversity of landscapes. To the west, the estuary of the Sèvre Niortaise estuary opens into the Aiguillon Bay, a very important area for thousands of migratory birds that come here to rest. Not far from the ocean, the 65,500 hectare Desiccated Marshes, protected from the tides by dykes, stretch as far as the eye can see and trees are rare. The Green Venice, between Maillé and Niort, offers a particularly original landscape between canals, hedged farmland and rows of poplars. The best way to discover the Poitevin marshes is by boat. During this immersion in nature, the guide deals with different themes on the Marais Poitevin such as gastronomy, fauna and flora or the formation of landscapes. The Marais Poitevin is also cities with a lot of charm such as Luçon in Vendée, or La Rochelle, the capital of Charente Maritime, both modern and rich in medieval heritage. The Marais Poitevin is finally picturesque villages, of which Mazeau, in Vendée, is truly the pearl of the green Venice thanks to its beautiful tangle of waterways.
