The Périgord, an ancient appellation of the Dordogne, has an impressive diversity of landscapes, a palette of multiple natural colours: black, green, purple, and white. The Périgord Noir is by far the most visited region of the department due to the many world-famous prehistoric sites such as Les Eyzies, capital of prehistory. Near the river Dordogne are many castles which make the fame of the Périgord - Montfort, Beynac, Fayrac, Castelnaud, Les Milandes, Marqueyssac - and superb sites such as La Roque-Gageac or the bastide of Domme. The "Black Perigord" has its capital, Sarlat, a medieval city par excellence. It is the European city with the highest number of listed or classified monuments per square kilometre. Situated in the north of the department, the "Green Perigord" is backed by the Massif Central. This region of Périgord has many must-see places such as Brantôme, nicknamed the " Venise verte " because it is coiled in the hollow of a loop of the Dronne. The Périgord is also Bergerac and its restored old quarter rich in architectural treasures such as the Romanesque church of Saint-Jacques or the statue of Cyrano de Bergerac. It is around Bergerac that the "Purple Périgord" is found, in reference to the colour of the vines. Périgueux, the emblematic city of the Périgord, has always had more difficulty attracting tourists. However, it has a Gallo-Roman city and many architectural gems such as the Cathedral of Saint-Front, a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the Santiago de Compostela route. This region of Périgord is called the "White Périgord" in reference to its limestone soil and numerous wheat fields. The Périgord is finally an extraordinary garden where chestnuts, strawberries, walnuts and vines rub shoulders with the black diamond, the mysterious and world-famous mushroom that is the truffle.
