Created in 1979, the Mercantour National Park is one of the 10 French national parks. Located in both the Alpes Maritimes and Alpes-de-Haute-Provence departments, it covers an area of 146,500 hectares. It has the particularity of hosting the highest diversity of flora at the national level with 2000 species of plants, including 200 rare and 30 endemic. The Mercantour's fauna is also very rich, with 57 species of mammals, including the wolf, and 153 species of birds, including some species that are found nowhere else in the world, such as the Siberian Owl. The Parc du Mercantour has 600 km of trails, making hiking the ideal leisure activity to discover this exceptional area, the product of a remarkable combination of geology and biodiversity. The Mercantour is also a mosaic of incredible landscapes that mixes mountains and a succession of lakes, passes and gorges. The Mercantour is also a particularly dense historical heritage. Its communes have real architectural treasures, including magnificent painted chapels from the 15th and 16th centuries. But the jewel of this Mercantour heritage is undoubtedly the Valley of Wonders, a pagan sanctuary from the Bronze Age, where more than 36,000 prehistoric engravings can be seen in the open air, making it one of the largest sites of its kind on the planet.
