LE CHANNEL, SCÈNE NATIONALE DE CALAIS

Concert hall for classical music opera and dance
4/5
1 review

Le Channel is the cultural powerhouse of Calais. Promoted to the status of "Scène nationale" in 1991, the association took up residence in the town's former abattoirs. The renovation of these buildings in 2007 gave a boost to its programming, which combines circus, culinary arts, concerts, theater, street arts... These quality shows are intended to be convivial and festive before being intellectual. The Channel also features annual highlights such as Les flâneries sonores, held in February, and, in some years, Feux d'hiver during the last days of December. Like its program, the association's buildings are surprising: this cultural venue has retained its industrial soul, and since 2009 has housed a bar, restaurant and bookshop. The former water tower has been transformed into a belvedere, offering a breathtaking view of Calais after 122 steps. The marquee opens and closes its colorful canvas like an accordion. The Channel staff are happy to give guided tours: just give them a call to make an appointment.

LE BOMMEL BAR

Pub
2.7/5
3 reviews

If you ask a Dunkirk inhabitant where to go for a drink in a nice place, he will direct you to the well named "rue de la Soif" and more precisely to Le Bommel, a very famous (but not only) beer bar. You can't miss it with its ten or so (Belgian) beer signs on its façade. The menu is also impressive: 14 draught beers, a wide choice of bottled beers, but also rum-based cocktails. The original decoration, with its heterogeneous objects, its hanging hop vines, its flags and beer napkins on the ceiling, its woodwork, has not moved despite the change of ownership. The establishment has a strong identity and on Friday and Saturday evenings, it's buzzing! This is what makes its charm. There are people of all ages, sailors on port calls, workers on the move, English people who often find a pub spirit in this place. The establishment regularly organises events and concerts, but people come here mainly to mingle, to chat all night long... listening to good big rock music, having a good time on Les Lacs du Connemara, and dancing to Dalida music. Le Bommel is just great!

LE BLACK PEARL

Bar and caf

Last year, this pub was taken over by the young Jenny who prints her rock style without altering the atmosphere of this English pub. Beer coasters cover the walls of the bar, a pool table and darts are available for guests. The place is really nice with its warm atmosphere. It feels great, drinking a beer at the bar - straight from a pub in Rochester - or sitting on one of the tables that overlook the street.

LE CACTUS CAFÉ

Bar and caf

The Cactus Café cartonne on the Malo dam. His drink (candied tomatoes, cheese rolls, salami, sausage, tortillas) séduit as much as the proposed cocktails and 10 special draught beers. We love the vaulted ceiling, the terrace, and the reception that is reserved in a cosy and convivial atmosphere. An essential on the dam, you will appreciate.

Located in a former bus station, this pretty Partouche Group casino offers over 1,000 square metres dedicated to gambling, with a 2000 ball table, blackjack, electronic English roulette and 75 slot machines. L’OUTBACK

Bar and caf

Only one bar but several atmospheres. A corner to have lunch or dinner in complete privacy, another one to party in a group or even tables to just have a drink while listening to music or watching the cinema screen that often broadcasts images from the other side of the world. The decor warms hearts on a grey day in an Australian seaside atmosphere. A la carte: kangaroo or ostrich fillet, a little weakness also for the Uluru salad or the grill board.

LES SPORTS, LE BAR À VINS

Cocktail bar
4/5

With its red facade, the wine and V.I.P. cocktail bar at Café des Sports is an eye-catcher. The interior is in keeping with this, very sober and chic at the same time. The bottles are proudly displayed behind the counter: the establishment offers no less than 48 different wines by the glass. Whisky and rum lovers, you will not be unhappy because the selection is also attractive there. This addition of bars to the ancestral brasserie des Sports regenerates the area.

LES 4 ÉCLUSES

Pop rock and variety concert hall

It is under the roof of a former powder keg of the th century that the association Arts Stage Rocks has settled. The idea is: offer eclectic music programming at local, national and international levels and create new talent. A promise of musical discovery, new sounds, new musical aesthetics in a most convivial and atypical room. In addition to organised concerts, several cultural activities are also carried out by the association throughout the year.
