If the city of Bourges has been capital several times in the course of its history, it's thanks to its strong personality and privileged geographical location in the heart of France. Tightly enclosed within its Gallo-Roman ramparts, the city tumbles down from the hill on which the cathedral is built to its marshy belt. In the historic center, you'll find fine boutiques, café terraces and excellent restaurants crowding the first floors of the town's characteristic half-timbered houses. Bourges radiates over the Berry region, a secret province rich in contrasting landscapes, creative gastronomy and exceptional cultural heritage. With 66,000 inhabitants, Bourges is at the center of an urban area of 135,000, making it the third most populous commune in the Centre region, just behind Tours and Orléans. In addition to the town's half-timbered houses and main town houses (Cujas, des Échevins, Lallemant, Hôtel-Dieu...), archiepiscopal palace (town hall, Meilleurs Ouvriers de France museum) and ramparts, don't miss Saint-Étienne cathedral and Jacques Cœur palace. Every year in April, the Printemps de Bourges is held, a renowned music festival first held in 1976. A new summer event also offers the chance to discover contemporary art at various venues in the city, including the Château d'eau - Château d'art de la ville, the Palais Jacques Cœur, the Galerie Poteaux d'Angle, and many others.
