The aptly named Venise verte is probably one of the most romantic spots in the Périgord. How can you fail to fall under the spell of this small town bathed by the Dronne River, carved out of stone and nestling against the rock? The crowds in high season will test your patience! Look up at the magnificent bell tower (actually a campanile built into the rock), designed by Viollet-le-Duc and said to be the oldest in France. Adjacent to it, the venerable Benedictine abbey founded by Charlemagne bears the scars of 12 centuries of history. The exceptional carved grotto, known as the Grotte de Jugement dernier, is well worth a visit.
