Located at the mouth of the Vilaine, Pénestin is bordered like a peninsula by the river to the north and the ocean to the south. There are no less than 25 km of coastline, including the famous beach of the Mine d'Or. Megalithic remains testify to the presence of men in prehistoric times. The Phoenicians used to store their tin cargoes from the English islands of Scilly (hence the etymology of the place). The Gauls, skilled blacksmiths, have left traces of their iron industry in Penestin. Pénestin has escaped the consolidation, which explains the intact charm of its hedges and sunken paths along the marshes and woods.
