From the old French word "ételle", which means a large wave, the pretty commune of Etel, a small fishing and pleasure port nestling at the entrance to the ria which bears its name, was bustling in 1937 with some 250 tuna boats: large two-masted dundees with superb sails, from pink to brown. Thanks to long poles lowered on each side, the sailors fished tuna by line. Wrecks of these boats lie on the sand, on the other side of the ria, in the marine cemetery of Magouër. Even today, the tuna festival is organized every summer. On the program: parade of floats and traditional meals of grilled tuna at lunch and dinner.
