The municipality is located on the Lanvaux moors, between the cantons of Locminé and Saint-Jean-Brévelay. Although the oldest forms of the city do not date back beyond the 15th century, the region is rich in remnants of iron age settlements. To be seen, a few kilometres east of the city: the castle of Kerguéhennec, also known as "the Breton Versailles", and, in Kerdel, the farm where Pierre Guillemot was born, which became the Maison des chouans (open to visitors). Pierre Guillemot (1759-1805), known as "the king of Bignan", was one of the most popular chouannerie chiefs in Morbihan.
