The origin of the name of this small commune located in the suburbs of Malouine comes from Saint-Jean and Guérets which means "ploughed and not sown land", "land left fallow". The commune has three islands on the Rance (lle-aux-Moines, lle Harteau and lle Chevret) as well as numerous manor houses and malouinières. Vegetable growing and fishing were once the main activities of the commune.
