In the 11th century, a castle replaced the former keep built by a Breton lord. In 1173, the castle was burnt down. Shortly afterwards, the Knights Templar founded one of Brittany's four commanderies. In the 13th century, La Guerche was surrounded by ramparts. Du Guesclin seized it in 1379 and remained its master for twenty years. Besieged by the English in the 15th century, the citadel was demolished in 1739. Today, the town features timber-framed houses and porches, as well as the beautiful Notre-Dame basilica. The 13th-century apse with its mullioned windows, the 12th-century tower, the stained-glass windows and the tomb of William II are also worth a visit.
