The name Quimperlé comes from kemper, which means "confluence" in Breton, and Ellé, one of the rivers that run through the town. The town lies at the confluence of the Ellé and Isole rivers. The two rivers join to form the Laïta, a tidal ria some fifteen kilometers long, which was once navigable and enabled Quimperlé to become a seaport. The lower town grew up around the church of Saint-Colomban, of which only a façade remains today, and the Benedictine abbey of Sainte-Croix de Quimperlé, while the upper town grew up around the church of Saint-Michel and its square.
