Originally, Ergué, which comes from Ar-Kae, meaning "the land in front of the fortifications", was a strategic site for the Celts, Gauls and Romans. From here, they were able to keep a watchful eye on the city of Quimper and the surrounding area. The name Gabéric was not added to Ergué until the 12th century. Then, in 1822, under the impetus of the Bolloré family, a paper mill was established, which later became the Manufacture de Papier de l'Odet, where OCB cigarette paper was manufactured! This industrial presence has not prevented this pretty little commune from emphasizing its natural side, with its many wooded areas.
