Douarnenez is a welcoming town, nestled between the Tas de Pois and the Pointe du Raz, between legend and epic... Tradition has it that the town dates back to the time of King Gradlon, when it was called Ys. Originally, it was called Douar an Enez ("land of the island"), which was later Frenchized to Douarnenez. Nestling at the head of a superb bay dotted with white sandy beaches, the town is also known for its four ports, all of which are active. Here, sardines forged the town's identity in the 19th and 20th centuries. Two large markets enliven the town on Saturdays, one in Tréboul and the other near the Halles, which remain open from Monday to Saturday.
