The Costa Rican capital is punctuated by three valleys: Gouët, Gouédic and Douvenant. This original topography necessitated the construction of numerous engineering structures, bridges, viaducts and other suspended boulevards, many designed by the engineer Harel de la Noë. The city center is an architectural patchwork of styles and eras. Around the cathedral, some forty half-timbered houses remain. As you stroll along its streets, you'll discover a number of jewels: the Pavillon de Bellescize (an atypical18th-century manor house), Breton Renaissance-style shipowners' houses and numerous small and large Art Deco nuggets.
