Travelling the Wine Route? Don't hesitate to stop off in this adorable village nestled in a green setting below the Taennchel massif. You'll discover the wonderful world of Thannenkirch, just a stork's flap away from the Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg. This mid-mountain village had its heyday after the castle was rebuilt, when tourism began to develop in the region. Its reputation as a peaceful village spread like wildfire. Dedicated to Saint Anne, a local spring (long thought to have miraculous virtues) added to the village's appeal. Between the wars, the Bernheim brothers founded the Vosges Fox Farm, dedicated to raising silver foxes, because in the 1920s, the bourgeoisie was keen on beautiful furs! But in 1929, the Depression led to a collapse in pelt prices, and La Renardière, whose buildings still stand on the village heights, was liquidated. Awarded the "Station Verte" label in 1997, Thannenkirch is a haven of peace for lovers of unspoilt nature. The hotels are of a high standard, and many of the restaurants are well worth a visit. Spurred on by the municipality with the support of local residents, an ambitious environmental policy has made Thannenkirch one of the most environmentally-friendly villages in Alsace. Thannenkirch is the starting point for a number of hikes, in particular to the Taennchel, a fabulous sandstone massif that is the stuff of legends and home to phantasmagorically shaped rocks.
