Plancoët, a large town on the banks of the Arguenon, went down in literary history thanks to Chateaubriand, whose grandmother lived in the Maison Notre-Dame. In the Mémoires d'Outre-Tombe, we learn in particular that following a vow, the little Chateaubriand was made to wear blue and white only, up to the age of 7 - in honour of Notre-Dame de Nazareth who was called Nozaret before 1644. In 1621, at the time of the Catholic Reformation, workers discovered a 13th century statue of the Virgin Mary, abandoned in a fountain in the place called Nozaret. Again abandoned and the statue thrown back into the water, the fountain was the object of miracles from 1631 to 1644. The cult of Our Lady of Nazareth was then recognized by the church. The former chapel of the Dominican convent - 17th century - became the church of Our Lady of Nazareth. Closer to us, the Notre-Dame house, rue de l'Abbaye, was the house of Chateaubriand's grandmother - 1768-1848. The writer was sent there as a nursemaid, then returned regularly to this place. He recounts these stays in Mémoires d'Outre-Tombe: "When I came out of my mother's womb, I went through my first exile, and was relegated to Plancoët, a pretty village located between Dinan, Saint-Malo and Lamballe. At the crossroads of the Emerald Coast, the Penthièvre coast and the medieval city of Dinan, discover the Arguenon valley. You will enjoy the pleasures and activities of the sea: sailing, diving, fishing on foot... You will discover the rich heritage of the past with its castles, chapels, megaliths and traditions. You will be fascinated by the discreet charm of the countryside: the wild valley of the Arguenon, the numerous lakes... and the footpaths will reveal wild and secret accents to nature lovers.
