Perched on a rocky spur, this small medieval town is worth a stop. A former stronghold of the Penthièvre, still surrounded by ramparts and eleven towers, Moncontour became rich thanks to the trade in linen and hemp cloth, exported to India and Spain. The church of Saint-Mathurin (16th and 18th centuries), with its Flemish and Italian influences, also bears witness to this flourishing commercial past. The "Petite Cité de Caractère" has a lot of charm, with its cobbled alleys, its superb half-timbered houses, its granite mansions, its medieval style signs... It is the scene of a medieval festival every two years.
