Matignon owes its existence to the lords of the same name, who built a castle on the Butte au Coq around the 11th century. There are many versions of the origin of the name. The most likely hypothesis is neither Celtic nor Breton, but Latin(Matinnhum). The last descendant of the Matignon lords, Luce, married Etienne Gouyon around 1180. Around the 13th century, the Gouyon family built a collegiate church and a manor house near the castle. Matignon grew up around it. Did you know that the princely family of Monaco was descended from this family? In 1715, Jacques-François-Léonor Gouyon de Matignon married Louise Grimaldi and became Prince of Monaco in 1731.
