Bréhat is a veritable jewel, nestled in a setting of pink rocks in the middle of the deep blue English Channel. Just ten minutes by boat from the tip of Arcouest, on the mainland, the island of Bréhat promises an enchanting change of scenery. The only island commune in the Côtes-d'Armor department, it is 3.5 kilometers long and 1.5 kilometers wide, and comprises two main islands with contrasting faces: the southern island, which enjoys a rather mild microclimate, is a small paradise criss-crossed by pink granite-lined shores, narrow streets dotted with pretty low-rise houses, contemporary villas and old stone manor houses, surrounded by walled gardens typical of the region. Connected by a bridge built in the 18th century, the northern island is wilder and more reminiscent of Ireland, with its desolate landscapes, jagged coastline, moorland vegetation and wild coves. This archipelago of islets is constantly animated by the ebb and flow of the tides. Spring is the ideal season to discover the island, which has been home to many artists since the 19th century, including painters Henri Matisse and Paul Gauguin.
