It was built in 1790 and is the largest municipality in the department after Loudéac, after absorption of two trèves (parishes) Trégornan and Saint-Michel. Located in the extreme southwest of the department, it encompasses the easternmost part of the Black Mountains, the hill of Ménez, culminating in the respectable height of three-hundred-metre-seven metres. Theatre of one of the most black episodes of the works of the canal from Nantes to Brest, this traditionally animated commune gathers every year the International encounter of popular Clarinet.
