Situated at the crossroads of the Seine-et-Marne, Aube and Loiret rivers, Villeneuve-sur-Yonne was founded in 1163 by Louis VII, under the name of Villefranche-le-Roy, and became one of the eight royal residences within an impressive wall. The old bridge over the Yonne River dates partly from this period. Throughout its history, Villeneuve has welcomed many artists: Chateaubriand, Mallarmé, Toulouse-Lautrec, Renoir, the sculptor Peynot, the writer Jorge Semprun, or, more recently, the actress Leslie Caron who for fifteen years ran one of the town's famous restaurants (La Lucarne aux chouettes), before selling it in 2010
