Nicknamed the "pearl of the vineyards", this fortified town has its origins in the High Middle Ages. Its 16th- and 16th-century mansions, oriel windows, ashlar Renaissance houses, timber-framed bourgeois houses, inner courtyards, old wells, fountains and centuries-old cobblestones are sure to delight visitors... Owned by the Count of Horbourg, Riquewihr was surrounded by walls as early as 1291. During the Second World War, while several towns in the surrounding area were completely destroyed in the winter of 1944-1945, Riquewihr was relatively unscathed despite its proximity to the front line and the artillery fire.
