The sub-prefecture of the Yonne department, Avallon is a peaceful town steeped in history. Long a strategic point and stopover on the route to Santiago de Compostela, this town overlooking the Cousin valley has preserved part of its ramparts, from which you can see the terraced gardens below, all surrounded by dry-stone walls. As for the historic center, there's no shortage of sights to see, starting with the collegiate church, 15th-century turreted houses and 16th- and 17th-century residences. There's no doubt that the great architect Vauban (born not far from here) still reigns supreme here!
