Tintry has its origin in a Gallo-Roman military camp. At the place called "La Vieille Tour" there was a feudal castle, near which a number of Roman tiles have been found. Work on the TGV line has confirmed the existence of an important ancient settlement. The commune of Tintry has a dam which supplies water to the neighbouring communes and a large part of the Autunois. Built between 1957 and 1961, it dammed the Pont-Allard stream, the Pont d'Argent stream, the Charbonnière stream and the Taupe-Vieille stream.
