On the heights, the small village of Saint-Maurice-des-Champs could well have been called Saint-Maurice-des-Bois. In fact, it was renamed Champs des Bois by the revolutionaries in 1789. Two Romanesque churches are particularly noteworthy in this area: the church of Saint-Maurice, which is in the heart of the village, and another 12th century church, also surrounded by a cemetery, in the hamlet of La Rochette. Also to be seen during a beautiful walk entitled "Around Champs des Bois" (guide Les Balades Vertes Sud de la Côte Chalonnaise), the castle of La Rochette. This castle housed the headquarters of the departmental staff of Saône-et-Loire des Francs-Tireurs et Partisans at the end of the Second World War. This 15th and 16th century castle, which has been redesigned many times, is private property and cannot be visited.
