The history of Saint-Forgeot was marked by the exploitation of an oil shale mine. In 1865, this production contributed to the manufacture of a shale oil close to natural petroleum and the supply of by-products, such as lamp oil, motor oil, lubricating oil, gasoline, fertilizers, insecticides. The mine closed in 1957. Some ruins of the buildings, a water tower and two slag heaps, artificial hills built by accumulation of mine waste, leave traces of this past.
