Between the Morvan and Charolais regions lies the Creusot-Montceau basin. Montceau-les-Mines was founded in 1856 by the Chagots, making it the youngest town in Saône-et-Loire. In 1818, Jean-François Chagot, a wealthy Parisian industrialist, became the owner of several companies in the region. His growing activities in Le Creusot, Montceau and Blanzy led to exponential growth throughout the mining basin. The search for workers led to a sharp rise in population, and the locality of Le Montceau was transformed into a new commune, Montceau-les-Mines.Today, the mining era is over and Montceau-les-Mines has successfully converted. The preservation of its heritage, the use of its canal for river tourism, the creation of its harbour and harbour master's office in the heart of the town, its proximity to major routes and the Montchanin TGV station are all assets. The old quarries have become superb parks, and the old factories and workshops are open to the public. Today, Montceau is a modern town where life is good. It is also proud to have been awarded the Terre de Jeux 2024 label. Its Jean-Bouveri gymnastics complex has been selected as a preparatory center for the Games.
