Bordered by vineyards, Mercurey lives to the rhythm of the vine. The commune is known the world over as the worthy representative of its appellation d'origine contrôlée, instituted in 1923. It comprises 32 premier cru climats in Mercurey and Saint-Martin-sous-Montaigu, with 847 ha of vines producing 3,316,000 bottles of red and 422,000 bottles of white each year. These crus can be kept for between five and seven years. Mercurey is an important stop-off point on the Côte Chalonnaise wine route. Its heritage is also remarkable, notably the 13th-century Romanesque church of Touches.
