Buttigliera Alta is a municipality of just over 6,000 inhabitants, attached to the administrative entity of the metropolitan city of Turin. It is located about 20 km west of the Piedmontese capital. It is best known for its Sant'Antonio di Ranverso commandery, founded in 1188 by Count Umberto III of Savoy, an abbey that was later expanded to include a hospital for pilgrims. The site is in fact on a part of the Via Francigena, the famous pilgrimage route from France to Rome. Its parish church San Marco Evangelista, built during the 17th century (except for the campanile, which dates from the 18th century), can be visited.
