Geologically fascinating, with sedimentary layers 4-5 million years old, a relief formed by plate tectonics, fossil-rich cliffs revealing layers of white ash deposited by the successive eruptions of the Taupo volcanic zone. But its main attraction is the presence of the 15,000 gannets(takapu) who return here from July to March-April to lay their eggs and indulge in their love dances. Only one egg is laid per pair. Males and females share the chores. At 15 weeks, the young take flight for Australia, where they stay for 2-3 years before returning to live here.
