Travel Guide El Carmen

For a tourist in search of folklore, the interest lies in the small village of El Carmen (about 15 minutes from Chincha en colectivo), with its beautiful sunny yellow church and placid central square. On the last Saturday in February, the town gets excited with music for its Festival del Verano Negro, while Chincha hosts the Festival de la Vendimia, in honour of the regional wine. On 27 December, El Carmen celebrates the fiesta of the Virgen del Carmen, known in the region as the Peoncita (Little Worker), during which groups of teenagers perform the dance of the "Little Negroes", music and bodies pulsating.
