Near the left bank of the Méchet, which is crossed by a three-arched bridge built in 1851, the village is one of the oldest in Morvan. First known as Verrière-sous-Glaine until 1697, La Grande Verrière got its name from the factories that were once there, and its nickname from an old castle that crowned the curious-looking rocks. There are several houses in the commune but they are not open to the public. The castle of Savilly, a beautiful two-storey building, has several pavilions and a round tower with a conical roof. The castle of Vautheau is a ruined fortress while, in the town centre, the castle of La Grande Verrière, also called Le Vouchot, was rebuilt in the 18th century. Finally, on the hillside, to the east of the village, is the 16th century château de Bouton, rebuilt in 1832, a pretty château with two pavilions and two turrets, with a large park, a chapel, a belvedere and a beautiful almshouse. The chapel is open in summer.
