Empoli (47,900 inhabitants) is bordered to the north by the Arno River. It is not very popular with visitors, but it does have a few treasures. From the piazza Farinata degli Uberti and its 19th century fountain of the Lions, you can go to the collegiate church of St. Andrew (11th-18th centuries), renovated after the Second World War. The Museum of the Collegiate Church is worth a visit. Also worth seeing is the Palazzo del Podesta (14th century), with its clock tower, the Palazzo Ghibellino (16th century), which houses the Civic Museum of Paleontology, and the Monastery of Santo Stefano (14th century) with a 16th century cloister.
