Sant Mateu, the capital of the historic territory of Bajo Maestrazgo, in the north of the province of Castellón, has 1,200 inhabitants. It is surrounded by olive and almond trees and grain fields, which are its main economic resources today. In the Middle Ages it was an important commercial centre, exporting wool to the spinning mills of Florence. Rich of its past, its city centre is classified as a Cultural Good. From the Plaça Major, you can discover its main points of interest on foot, including: the archipresbyteral church (13th-18th centuries), the Augustinian convent (16th-18th centuries), the Borrull Palace (15th century) and the Villores Palace (16th century)
