Montemor-o-Novo has 17,400 inhabitants. This small town in central Alentjo is known for its castle and two personalities born here: Saint John of God (1495-1550), a Franciscan monk and founder of the Hospitaller order, and the contemporary writer Benigno José Mira de Almeida Faria (1943/-). The fortress, protected by two ruined towers, was already in existence during the reign of Sancho I (12th century). The walls, built by order of Dom Dinis I in the 13th century, still have the main plan and eleven cylindrical keeps. These elements were reinforced with barbicans in the 14th century.
