Macedo de Cavaleiros (17,200 inhabitants) is a land of manor houses located near the Serra de Bornes, a mountainous region that has become very popular for the practice of extreme sports, including paragliding. In the 18th century, silkworm breeding was one of the main activities in the area. The ruins of the Royal Chacrim Spinning Mill are evidence of this. The site should soon be integrated into the European Silk Road project, of which Macedo de Cavaleiros will be the headquarters in Portugal. Several museums can also be visited, such as the house of the bandstand or the museum of honey and beekeeping.
