On the north-western side of the island, the tiny harbour of Pollara, carved out of the rock, offers a sandy beach, the only one on the island (the others are pebble beaches) and surprisingly clear waters. The village faces the Aeolian Islands to the west, with Filicudi opposite. To reach it you must first go along the north coast to Malfa, climb up and then turn right to go down a small winding road. It is here, in Pollara on the only sandy beach of the island, that the film The Postman (Il Postino) was shot, which recounts the Italian exile of the Chilean poet Pablo Neruda, played by the late Philippe Noiret
