Located at the extreme north of the archipelago, North Ronaldsay is the most remote of Orkney. It takes 2h40 by ferry from Kirkwall (Mainland) to dock in its port. Old Beacon is one of the oldest lighthouses in Scotland, lit in 1789. The New Lighthouse was established nearby in 1854. It is the highest land lighthouse in Great Britain, with a height of over 30 m. The Broch of Burrian is one of the key archaeological attractions, but the island also has several burial cists and standing stones. People come here for the wildlife, the flora and the isolation. The island still has one foot in the tradition and has retained the old fashioned crofting system.
