Sanday is located in the north-western part of Orkney, 1h25 by ferry from Kirkwall (Mainland). The island is interesting for its beautiful white sandy beaches, its wildlife and its archaeological sites. Elsness-Quoyness Chambered Tomb dates from 2000 BC and is one of the wonders of the island (free access). Tresness-Wasso Broch and Chambered Tomb are also worth seeing. The Bay of Lopness is the final resting place of the wreck of the German destroyer B98, sunk in 1919, visible at low tide. Start Point Lighthouse is a lighthouse built in 1870: its first version (1802) was the work of Robert Stevenson, the writer's grandfather. Its black and white stripes are atypical.
